HERBERT GRASSET STEWART It is with great sadness the family of Herbert Stewart announces his passing on July 26, 2005. Herb was born in Selkirk, MB on April 25, 1949 to Lillian (Canvin) and Bert Stewart. He grew up in Cloverdale attending grades 1 to 8 at Cloverdale School, continuing on at Selkirk Collegiate for grades 9 to 12. After graduation Herb enlisted in the U.S. Marines which included a tour of duty in Vietnam. During this time, he also was able to see some more of the world while on leave in England and Australia. Upon leaving the Marines he travelled and worked throughout the U.S. From there Herb moved to Kingston, ON to live with his Aunty Marie and Uncle David while attending Queen's University. While there he wrote a play called She Said I Love Froggy which received a great review. He always wanted to be a writer and had a great love of reading. Herb also lived with his sister and brother-in-law, Val and Rob in Grande Cache, AB, working in the mine with Rob. When he came back to Manitoba it took him some time to figure out what he wanted to do. Eventually he became a machinist working for Frandsen and Ross, then Vesatile and finally Alphair Ventilating Systems, up until the time of his passing. Herb is survived by his brothers, Charles (Wendy) and James Stewart; sisters, Maggie (Chester) Chapil, Valerie (Rob) Robinson and Virginia Stewart; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Lillian and Bert; his wife Audrey; sister Diane; and nephew Trevor. Herb will be sadly missed, especially for his sense of fun at every family event. We never knew what to expect and everyone has a few Uncle Herb stories to remember him by. He also had a great love of animals. Herb cared for many pets, including breeding huskies with which he liked to give the kids dog sled rides. He had a great sense of adventure with another undertaking just a day away, whether it was water balloon fights, going kayaking or playing old timer hockey. A memorial service will be held Friday, July 29 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk with Pastor Stan Richards officiating. A private family interment of ashes will take place at a later date. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
