Uncle Ed was a warm, gentle and humorous part of our childhood. He brought a certain lightness to family gatherings that we appreciated. Although 20 years older than my sister and I, he seemed to be one of us in some way, a cool adult. Perhaps it was the obvious physical suffering of the rheumatoid arthritis he endured that we found so affecting. Or it was his slight irreverence or his freedom to sometimes poke fun at our parents. I remember him picking my sister and I up from St. John’s Cantius catechism class on Saturday afternoons and I remember how he extolled the virtues of his favourite musical instrument, the clarinet. I remember his 1965 Plymouth Barracuda that I thought was so cool because you could fold down the back seat and potentially (if you were 10) sleep in it, making you perfectly self-sufficient. Ed introduced me to opera and especially Luciano Pavarotti. This is another of his loves that has stayed with me. One could, if one chose to look at it from a particular point of view, see his life as tragedy filled with undeserved suffering. But I don’t believe he ever saw it that way. Though he lost his parents while in his early 20’s, and lost his older brother and sister later, Ed had a strong faith in God and in the existence of the Saints. The last time I spent with him when he was well (1998), he mentioned to me that an artist he knew named Leo Mol had a sculpture garden in Assiniboine Park. Ed thought this was a very good thing and that I should check it out. Over my 8 month visit here in Winnipeg I’ve walked through the Leo Mol sculpture garden at least 200 times. It is an absolute beauty. Thank you Leo, and thank you Ed. My favourite sculpture in the garden is definitely Jane Lawson -1972. - Posted by: Rick Sapinski (Nephew) on: Mar 22, 2021
