CHARLES DOUGLAS BOTHWELL IRETON After a brave and determined battle with cancer, Doug Ireton, aged 92, passed away quietly at his home in Vancouver on Tuesday, July 5, 2005. Doug was born in Winnipeg and served in the RCAF as a flight lieutenant and instructor in Brandon during the Second World War. Following the war, he resumed his career in the grain business. At the time of his retirement in 1977, he was the Manager of the Pioneer Grain Terminal in Vancouver, was a past-president and lifetime member of the Vancouver Grain Exchange and was instrumental in contract negotiations during the 1950s and 1960s with the Grain Workers Union, as spokesperson for the five elevator companies on the Lower Mainland. As testament to his negotiating skills, Doug was honoured by the presence of the union leader at his retirement celebration. Doug was predeceased by his first wife, Marg, who passed away in 1968. He is survived by his wife Elma; his three daughters, Marnie (Tulsa), Carol (Vancouver) and Julie (Winnipeg); his granddaughter, Stephanie (Winnipeg); stepson Duane Brown and Duane's family (Langley). A special thanks is offered to all of his palliative care workers who were so caring. A private service is being held for immediate family members only. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Doug's memory is asked to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society.
