CYRIL HERBERT TOBIAS It is with great sadness that the family of Cyril Tobias of Vancouver announces his passing on July 25, 2005, at the age of 88 years. Beloved brother to Bill and sister-in-law Julie Tobias of Calgary; uncle to Jim Tobias of Sarnia, Bruce Tobias, Chris Tobias and Kimberley Barrett (nee Tobias) of Calgary, their spouses and children. He had many friends and acquaintances from his varied life interests in Vancouver. Born April 13, 1917, in Morden, MB, where one of his first jobs was working at the Agricultural Experimental Farm as well as playing saxophone in a dance band. Cyril served with 420 Royal Canadian Air Force squadron as a pilot in the Second World War, during which he spent three years as a Prisoner Of War in Germany after being shot down. Cyril completed his Agriculture degree from the University of Manitoba upon returning from the war. He then went to work for Canada Packers in Vancouver where he supervised the lab until his retirement. Cyril became interested in running in his 60s, starting with the Stanley Park sea wall to completing 18 marathons. Some of his other interests included riding his motorcycle when not sun tanning on Wreck Beach. Cyril's fighting spirit and tenacity brought him back from his first stroke to walk and care for himself again with the support of Brock Fahrni physio staff. Cyril spent his remaining years in George Derby Centre in Burnaby, maintaining his interest in physical and artistic activities. The family wishes to thank the staff at George Derby who made it home to Cyril in his final years, indulging his love of dogs, and keeping him comfortable in his final days.
