Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBARBARA ELLEN MCLEAN (ROFFEY) April 3, 1933 - July 27, 2005 Our beautiful and loving mother is now freed from the cancer that she faced so bravely. Mum was held by her children as she passed peacefully in her home. Mum's kindness and compassion knew no bounds. Barb was born in Winnipeg, Canada and moved to San Diego in 1981. She proudly became a US citizen in 1991. Growing up on a farm during the Depression instilled in her the strong spirit she valiantly showed at the end of her days. She generously gave of herself to anyone in need of a home cooked meal, a hug or a smile. Her goofy and fun-loving disposition was infectious and enjoyed by all. Mum held various jobs in her life but the one that she embraced the most was that of mother. She always said that she looked her best when holding a baby. Her life was dedicated to family and she leaves behind her precious children, Leslie Cumming, Sherry Bell, Darcy McLean, Bruce McLean, Jamie Rasmussen and Sheila McEntire; eight cherished grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; as well as her four-legged, constant companion, Buddy. Barbara is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dolores Roffey; and brother David Roffey, both of Winnipeg. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Bertie Roffey; as well as her brother, Andy Roffey, all of Winnipeg. Mum believed that adversity was character building and thus, never felt sorry for herself no matter what hand was dealt to her in the game of life. She led her life with love in her heart and the belief that there was goodness in all people. Do not stand by my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints upon the snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain and I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am that swift uplifting rush, Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand by my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. Barb's kids would like to express their heartfelt thanks to our nurses, Laurel Glenn-Harmer, who enabled Mum to die with dignity, peace and love and Veronica Vallez, who made her laugh. Services were held in San Diego on Saturday, July 30. In lieu of flowers, Barbara would love you to make a donation to The Elizabeth Hospice, animal shelter or children's charity of your choice.
