HELEN J. BRANDT Helen Janz, the daughter of Benjamin P. and Katherina (Barkman) Janz was born on September 5, 1909, in Steinbach, MB. She graduated from high school in Steinbach and continued her education at Bible colleges, including Winnipeg Bible College and Moody Bible Institute. Helen was baptized upon confession of her faith at the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church in Steinbach. On July 28, 1935, Helen was united in marriage to Henry Abram Brandt at Steinbach. They made their home in Steinbach until 1954, when she came to Mountain Lake, MN, with her husband as a pastor's wife. Along with being a wife and mother, Helen enjoyed being a teacher to many. Henry died on January 28, 1965. Following her husband's death, Helen lived in Wheaton, IL, Hamilton, MA, Puerto Rico, Grantham, PA, and she returned to Mountain Lake in 1986. She enjoyed reading, studying language, crossword and word puzzles, crocheting and knitting, being a friend to international students and Grandma to many. Helen kept history alive by telling stories, and she led a Children's Ministry while living in Steinbach. Helen died on Thursday, February 10, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Village in Mountain Lake. Helen is survived by two sons, David and his wife Melva Brandt of Newberg, OR, and James and his wife Linda Brandt of Mountain Lake, MN; five grandchildren, David and his wife Diane Brandt, Stephen and his wife Jody Brandt, Pamela and her husband Peter Simpson, Mark and his wife Valerie Brandt and David Brandt; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Katherine Rieger of Steinbach, and Lydia and her husband William Regehr of Omaha, NE; three brothers, Walter Janz of Dallas, OR, Alvin and his wife Agnes Janz of Steinbach, and Arthur and his wife Martini Janz of Goshen, IN; a sister-in-law, Elma Rempel of Winnipeg, many other relatives and friends. She was predeceased in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Anne Kreutzer; three brothers, Peter, Benjamin and John Janz; two sisters-in-law, Catherine Brandt, and Elizabeth and her husband Jacob Regehr; and brothers-in-law, Peter Rempel and Sebastian Rieger. Services were held in Mountain Lake, MN, February 15, at the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church. A memorial service will be held in Steinbach, Thursday, August 4, 2:00 pm at the Cornerstone Bible Church, with an ash interment at the Steinbach Memorial Cemetery.
