LAURA LENA MALECKI Laura Lena Malecki, aged 92 years, passed away peacefully at the Seven Oaks General Hospital on July 31, 2005. Mourning her passing are her daughters, Margaret and husband Stan Pondo, Mildred and husband Marcus Stephens and Ilene Kardashinski and husband Ron Watt of Mississauga, ON. She will also be missed by her grandchildren, Sandra and husband Dan Hilborn of Cambridge, ON; Michael and his wife Karen Stephens; Susan and her husband Tony Warzel; Kari and husband Mark Studer of Calgary, AB and Shannon Watt and Seton Steibert of Ottawa, ON. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Josh and Jenna Hilborn; Marcus and Aaron Stephens; Monica and Andrea Warzel; Everett, Carson and Ryan Ann Studer; her sister-in-law, Mary Dzydz; her brother, Walter Dzydz; nephew Matt and wife Wanda Malecki; as well as many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Laura Malecki was predeceased by her parents, John and Annastasia Dzydz; first husband Walter Kardashinski; second husband Joseph Anthony Malecki; her son Gordon Edward Kardashinski; her sister Helen and husband Joe Sheryak; her brother Michael and wife Margaret Dzydz and her brother Joseph Dzydz. Laura was born on January 18, 1913 in Arnes, MB. In 1932, she met her first husband Walter Kardashinski. They married on April 26, 1933 and farmed in Ledwyn, MB for ten years. Here were born their first three children, Margaret, Mildred and Ilene. In 1943 they sold the farm and moved to Winnipeg for a better education for their children. Their last child, Gordon, was born in Winnipeg that year. Walter passed away suddenly on December 25, 1951 and Laura began work in the garment industry. On August 28, 1954 she married Joseph Anthony Malecki. Laura continued working in the garment industry for 25 years achieving the status of sample producer because of her skills. She retired in 1976. Laura and Joe enjoyed travelling and after Joe's retirement from Canadian National Railways, they travelled extensively in Canada and the United States, using his rail pass. During this time, Laura liked to entertain their group of friends and getting together monthly to play card games. They went to dances at the Sokol and Laura loved packing picnic lunches with homemade feasts for their outings at beaches and parks. Laura cherished having the family over for dinner. Laura and Joseph were married for 41 years at his death at the age of 102 on January 3, 1996. Laura was a wonderful cook and baker passing on the many wonderful recipes of her youth to her children. Her children's many friends also shared in her famous cinnamon buns and raised yeast doughnuts on Saturdays. Laura was an excellent seamstress making identical outfits for her daughters. She delighted in dressing her son in finely stitched sailor suits. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always smiling in their presence. In the last two and a half years, Laura was a resident at the Maples Personal Care Home. Many thanks to her wonderful caregivers. A funeral service will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 5. Interment to follow in Holy Ghost Cemetery.
