JOAN MARY BROOKES (nee BENZIE) Joan Mary (nee Benzie) passed away on May 27, 2005 at Lion's Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, BC. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank in 1981, her brothers David Roy and Leighton and is survived by her daughter Carol (Robert) Paley, grandchildren Michael and Angela, sister-in-law Kathleen, siblings Betty (Bill) Headon, Frank (Mair) Benzie and their families. Joan was born on Oct. 22, 1923 in the village of Penyfai, South Wales. During the Second World War, she joined the Royal Air Force, serving as a parachute packer. She and Frank married in 1948, emigrated to Canada in 1951 and settled in the St. James/Silver Heights area of Winnipeg, MB. Joan worked 30 years for the Hudson's Bay Co.in the grocery/meat department with her best buddy Minnie MacMillan. After her retirement, she moved to Deep Cove, BC to live with her daughter's family and spent the last 20 years enjoying her grandchildren, travelling, knitting, reading and going out for a meal of halibut and chips. A memorial service will be held in Winnipeg on Saturday, August 6, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave., followed by the interment and reception.
