In the early hours of August 5, 2005 Karen Jane Mulgrew (nee Kersey) passed away in the Palliative Care Unit at the Riverview Health Centre, #1 Morley Wpg. MB. A devoted wife and mother, Karen is survived by her husband Patrick, son Kenneth and wife Mavis and their two sons Liam and Matthew, as well as her daughter Mary and her husband Dwayne Kirk, also many relatives here and South Western ON. Karen was born in Windsor, ON July 15, 1941 to Kenneth Sydney Jabez Kersey and his wife Gladys (nee Carmichael). Karen attended Riverside High School and Alma College in St. Thomas, ON. She graduated as a registered nurse from the Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in 1964. Karen's career in nursing included time at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Windsor, ON and Harper General Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and the I.O.D.E. Windsor Western Hospital, where as a health nurse she met her husband Pat. Following their marriage on December 21, 1968, they moved to Winnipeg where Kenneth was born in 1969 followed by Mary in 1974. In 1974 the family moved to Kenora, ON and returned to Winnipeg in 1981, where Karen took a R.N. refresher course and worked at the Victoria General Hospital until being engaged as a Clinical Health/Geriatric nursing instructor with the Core Area Iniatives Program. Then Karen worked for several years as a Staff Development Instructor at the Tache Nursing Center. She volunteered as a health issue presenter at the Women's Health Center, also at the Victoria Hospital Surgicentre. Karen was a gifted singer and enjoyed participating in the Windsor Light Opera Society and G- clef choir in Kenora, Ontario as well as the Philharmonic Choir, and the Gilbert Sullivan Society choral group. Karen was a caring, loving and helpful person who maintained her interest in health and wellness until the time of her illness. She will be sorely missed. The family extends its warmest appreciation to all of those involved in caring for her during her illness. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire donations in Karen's memory may be made to the Riverview Health Center, Palliative Care Unit. Funeral Service celebrating Karen's life will be held on Thursday, August 11 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Saviour's Anglican Church, corner of Munroe and Grey St. Private family interment will occur at a later date.
