LOUISA ELLEN GOULD (nee HILL) Ellen died peacefully at the Hamiota District Health Centre, Hamiota, MB, on Saturday, August 6, 2005, in her 91st year. Ellen is survived by daughter Doreen Gould; son Dr. Fred (Donna) Gould; son the Rev. Earl (Joyce) Gould; daughter-in-law Shirley (Jack) Codd; grandchildren, Dickson (Judy) Gould, Dr. Lisa Gould (Dr. Richard Leicht), Jason Gould (Sarah Eyton), Crystal, Tracy, Donald Gould (Justina), Heather Codd (Brent); great-grandchildren, William, Richard, David, Stefan, Anthony, Bronwyn, Rory, Tracilynn; brother Alvin (Mary) Hill and many other relatives including nieces and nephews. Ellen was predeceased by her parents, John Thomas (J.T.) Hill and Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) English; husband Malcolm Stanley Campbell Gould (Stan); brother Arnold (Isabel) Hill; sister-in-law Dorothy Hill and son Dr. Donald Gould (tragically on October 23, 1971); and sisters-in-law, Mary (Don) MacKay, Jean (Robert) Cumming, Winifred (Charles) Dovell, Grace Gould; brothers-in-law, Dan (Marion) Gould, Dwight Gould. Ellen was born on the Hill farm on September 28, 1914, in the RM of Woodworth. She went to school at Harding, MB, graduating from grade XII. As a young woman she worked at home and for neighbouring farm homes. On November 14, 1934, Ellen married Stan Gould and they farmed at Kenton. In 1991 Stan and Ellen moved to Lilac Residence in Hamiota and to Birch Lodge in 2004. As a youth Ellen was an organist for Sunday School or Church services at Shiloh Church. For many years she sang in the Kenton United Church Choir. In her senior years she often played for other seniors for worship and other events. For 20 years she was treasurer for the local United Church pastoral charge. Ellen was very active in Manitoba Federation of Agriculture (MFA), Woman's Missionary Society and then the United Church Women (UCW). Ellen was really energized by leading or participating in a study group and was indeed a social activist ahead of her time. Ellen seemed to have a way of communicating with plants and truly enjoyed her house plants, garden and farm grounds. In 1981 her passion for gardening and landscaping was rewarded by the Goulds receiving first place for Farm Home Grounds for an area encompassing much of Southern Manitoba. From 1962 to 1983 Ellen managed a business venture of growing bedding plants. She established herself as a reputable source and customers came from great distances to get their plants. The visit to the Gould farm two miles south of Kenton always included a visit and often a cup of tea. A legacy left behind is her years of work researching and compiling a Gould History Book. She was honoured by daughter-in-law Joyce's compiling the family favourites of her lifetime collection of tried and true recipes, a fitting tribute to the many family events hosted at the Gould farm. A significant passion was the support for daughter Doreen in overcoming physical handicaps in her life adventures. The tragedy of her life was the accidental death of her youngest son (Donald). But she resolved to continue to live life to the full. The last year of her life was spent without her beloved husband (of almost 70 years). May her passion for life, keen wit and appreciation for a good laugh be a memory that lives on, enriching all who knew Ellen. Her family invited you to share in celebrating Ellen's 90 years of living in a service of worship which was held at the Hamiota United Church, Hamiota, on Friday, August 12 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Glenna Beachamp presiding. Interment followed at Rosewood Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Brandon, MB. The family of Ellen Gould wishes to especially thank Ellen's nephew-in-law Allan Cumming and his wife Maxine for their friendship and support. Also deep gratitude is expressed to all the staff of the Hamiota District Health Centre complex, truly a great service to the region. In lieu of flowers or as a memoriam, those wishing to do so may make a donation in Ellen's memory to the Hamiota District Health Centre Foundation Inc., 177 Birch Ave. E., Hamiota, MB R0M 0T0. Campbell Funeral Home, Hamiota were in care of arrangements. (204) 764-2744.
