GUENTER WEIRICH June 16, 1920 - August 10, 2005 It is with sorrow that his family announces that Guenter Weirich passed away at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg on August 10, 2005, at the age of 85. He leaves to mourn his wife of 53 years, Klara; his son Andreas and wife Mirella of Ottawa; his son Martin and wife Shaney of Winnipeg; grandchildren, Esther, Alexandra, Thomas, Sarah, and Michael; sister-in-law Marlene and husband Edward Hurta of Winnipeg; sister-in-law Anne and husband Harry Voigt of Morris, MB; sister-in-law Adina Zahn of Winnipeg; brother-in-law Peter Hooge of Germany; cousin Anita and husband Heinz Hindemith and family of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his mother Margarete and father Richard; his brothers, Karl, Otto, Herbert, and Helmut, all of Germany; his brother-in-law Herman Hooge of Winnipeg. Guenter was born in Liegnitz, Schlesien, Germany and was educated as a technical draftsman. He suffered through the devastation of his homeland and the loss of two brothers through the Second World War, and settled briefly in Hannover, Germany, where he worked at Hanomag and met and married his wife Klara in 1952. He immigrated to Canada with his wife in 1953, and pioneered the trail during numerous hard and frugal years, so many of the family could join them in Winnipeg, where he lived and worked since 1955. He was employed for many years at Monarch Industries, often proudly detailing to family the many pump, mixer, and hydraulic cylinder designs in which he was involved. He retired from Monarch in 1985. Guenter possessed a strong faith, which led him to support many missionary and compassionate organizations, and was for many years very active in church affairs, including serving on church councils. During his summer leisure time, he enjoyed the peaceful life at the family cottage for many years, until his weakening health made the trip too strenuous. His family would like to thank the staff at the Grace Hospital for their care and compassion during his several and sometimes lengthy stays, and especially during his last days there. A gathering in remembrance of Guenter will held at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., on Sunday, August 14 with visitation from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 9 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 65 Walnut St., Winnipeg, with interment to follow at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to some of Guenter's favourite charities: Orbis International, 2200 Yonge St., 8th Floor, Toronto, ON M4S 2C8; World Vision, 6630 Turner Valley Rd., Mississauga, ON L5N 2S4; Hearing Foundation of Canada, 330 Bay St., Ste. 1402, Toronto, ON M5H 2S8 or Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7.
