DOUGLAS RAYMOND NEPINAK June 19, 1960 - August 13, 2005 Everything that I am fits in a teardrop that evaporates. On August 13, 2005 Douglas passed away peacefully with his dearly beloved wife, Tracey and his mother Marie Therese, at his side. Douglas was a devoted husband and father and he will be most deeply missed by his daughters, April, Rochelle and Jez Jaxon. He now joins his father Jonas, in the spirit world. His memory will always be cherished by all who knew him, including his siblings, Robert (Sheila), Vernon (Lenora), Marcel, Fran and Joyce (James), his extended family, the staff at the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and his many, many friends. Doug lived a vibrant, rich life and he touched countless people, not only through his extraordinary manner but also through his career as a writer. He served as an editor with Weetamah and made a significant contribution to the Native theatre and arts community in Canada as a playwright and poet. Douglas was the brains and brawn behind the theatre collective As the Bannock Burns and a dedicated member and co-founder of Winnipeg's Aboriginal Writers Collective. Over the past decade, his career path took him to the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs as the Communications Advisor. In Doug's own words, he was poet, playwright and propagandist for the cause. Douglas also served in the Canadian Armed Forces for seven years from 1979 to 1986. He reflected upon this experience with great pride and fond memories. He graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a BA Honours English in 1993. He was also an active member of the Alano club where he gave much of his time to the friends of Bill W. Douglas will always be remembered as a person who lived his life so well, with honesty and clarity, great joy and love. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the palliative care ward of the St. Boniface Hospital and especially to the dear Fr. Roland Lanoie. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba. Douglas' wish was to return to his home in Pine Creek, MB. The wake will commence at 4:00 p.m. and prayers at 8:00 p.m., August 17, at the Old School Gym in Pine Creek. The funeral service is to be held August 18 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Stone Church in Camperville, MB.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I sailed with Doug for 4 years. We were also close friends - Doug and his wife and daughter would come cover to our place quite often. We had long talks together. I at the time was an AA member, I was very happy to hear that he was a Friend of Bill W. Doug showed me some of his early writings and he said one he would be a writer. I was please to hear his dream came true. Over the years I never heard from Doug. I often wonder where Doug was. Till I came across this obituary.
