EDWARD HUGH SHUTE 1916 - 2005 With his family at his side, Edward Hugh Shute passed away peacefully at the Carewest Colonel Belcher on Thursday, August 18, 2005 at the age of 88 years. Ed was born in Winnipeg, MB on September 13, 1916. Upon graduation from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute, he joined the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) and in September of 1939 enlisted in the Canadian Air Force. After being medically discharged from the Air Force in 1941, Ed returned to Winnipeg, married his high school sweetheart, Beatrice McKelvey, and resumed his career with CPR. During his years with CPR, Ed and his family moved several times, settling in Calgary in 1966. He became an active member of the Calgary community, achieving life memberships with both the Heritage Park Society and the Calgary Stampede Board. In 1975, Ed accepted a position in Bandung, Indonesia as the head of an international consortium of railway consultants. He returned to Montreal in 1977 to assume the role of the first Vice-President of Operations for the newly formed Via Rail Canada. In 1979, Ed retired to Calgary and continued to be an active member of his Southwood Community, especially the Southwood Seniors. For over 50 years, Ed also maintained a membership as a Freemason with the Foothills Masonic Lodge No. 174. Ed will be forever remembered by his three daughters, Marilyn (Mike) Rybchuk, Jacquie (Paul) Reinprecht and Sandi (Frank) Olson; and son Dennis (Pat) Shute. He will also be remembered by his ten grandchildren, Colin Wright, Cheryl (Tyler) Hadfield, Mark Rybchuk, Corinne (Paul) Yusypchuk, Jeff Reinprecht, Steven (Sarah) Reinprecht, Brendan (Barb) Olson, Christine (Owen) McCardle, Mike Olson, and Adam Shute; as well as his four great-grandchildren, Matthew Hadfield, Ashlyn Hadfield, Andrew Yusypchuk, and Henry McCardle. Ed was predeceased by Beatrice, his wife of 61 years, in 2003. A Candlelight Memorial Service will be held at Southwood United Church (10690 Elbow Dr. S.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, August 27 at 7:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Friends of the Colonel Belcher Society , 41 Bermondsey Cres.
