MORLEY COHEN MD November 18, 1923 - August 18, 2005 Dr. Morley Cohen passed away August 18, 2005 at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg. He is survived by Joan, his wife of 52 years; and their five children, Eve, Jamie, Trish, Richard and Chuck; as well as extended family Sherry, Charlene, Alex, Adam, Rebecca and Hillary. Morley was born and raised in Winnipeg's North End. He received his undergraduate and medical school education at the University of Manitoba (1948). He then went to the University of Minnesota for post graduate surgical training, completing his residency and PhD in Surgery before returning to Winnipeg in 1955. He joined the Department of Surgery at the University of Manitoba where he practiced until his retirement in 1987. He brought with him new ideas and techniques based upon the pioneering research he had done with his colleagues at the University of Minnesota. As the driving force behind the introduction of cardiac surgery to the Province of Manitoba, he served as head of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery from its inception in 1967 to 1984. While perhaps better known for his professional accomplishments to the outside world he was equally a devoted husband and father who always found time for his family and friends. Never one for self promotion, he nevertheless contributed quietly over many years to many lives he touched in his home community of Winnipeg. He was at heart a highly principled teacher, problem solver and community citizen who by example inspired those who knew him to better themselves and their surroundings. He will be deeply missed. The family would like to thank Dr. Hugh Smith, the staff on 5B and 6AS at St. Boniface Hospital, and the staff at Home Care for their care and compassion. A family graveside service has already been held. If family and friends so desire, donations in his memory may be made to the St. Boniface Hospital And Research Foundation, in care of The Dr Morley Cohen Fund .
