DORIS ELIZABETH HAMILTON December 23, 1929 - August 24, 2005 Doris Hamilton passed away peacefully after a long struggle with cancer at the age of seventy-five. She is survived by her daughters Leslie Doucette and Karen Hamilton Waterman and grandaughters Dr. Kristen Cuthbert and Laura Cuthbert. She is also is survived by her sons-in-law Robert Doucett and Dr. Larry Waterman, sister Linda Phillips, brothers-in-law Bus Phillips and Ed Webber and her sisters-in-law Anne Edwards and Lucille Edwards as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends. She was pre-deceased by her father Fred, her mother Doris (Pat), her brothers Russell and Bob Edwards and sister Joan Webber. Doris was born in Lucky Lake, SK. After her family relocated to Winnipeg, she trained as a nurse, graduating with top honours and serving as president of her class in 1951. She remained in Manitoba as a nurse, but eventually joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a nursing sister where she met her navigator husband Hugh Hamilton. They moved several times with the service. After their divorce in 1967 Doris settled back in Winnipeg with her two daughters and joined the staff of Deer Lodge Hospital where she was head nurse of the coronary and Intensive Care Unit. Doris was an early leader in labour negotiations representing her fellow nurses for fair wages and better care for patients. She was well respected during her long career by nurses and doctors alike. After retiring in 1985 she moved to Halifax with daughter Karen. In 1990 Doris settled in Cranbrook, BC joining her much loved sister-in-law Anne Edwards. Doris was well loved and respected among all who knew her and were lucky enough to be her friend or patient. Her spirit and infectious laugh will remain with us all. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 24 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church, 2602 8th Street, Calgary, AB followed by a Celebration of Life dinner in her honour. Any inquiries can be directed to Karen at 250-741-7924 (cell).

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • As a co-worker of Doris's in the early 1980's I fondly remember her as an RN mentor and someone with the ability to motivate patients even when they lacked the will to participate in their own care. Farewell Doris. - Posted by: Edith Stephenson (Co-Worker) on: Sep 10, 2005
