JEWEL MARY THERESA VICTORIA O'SULLIVAN Peacefully after a brief illness, Jewel Mary Theresa Victoria O'Sullivan died early in the morning on Saturday, September 3, 2005 at the Victoria General Hospital. On December 30, 1914, Jewel (Dulie to her friends and family) was born and then lived her entire life in Winnipeg. She attended St. Mary's School and St. Mary's Academy where she nurtured lifelong friendships. Imagine being able to say you've had the same friends for 85 years?! Jewel had an incredible love for her family that began at an early age. She put her own dreams aside to get a job to help support her mother and five siblings. From Ford Motor Company to Eaton's to a lengthy career at Hudson Bay House (Northern Stores), Jewel enjoyed her work and still had contact with the friends she made each place. Spending time with the family gave her great joy whether it was someone's birthday celebration, a dinner at Rae Jerry's or Mass on Saturday night. A caring, generous soul, Jewel served endless hours as a volunteer. Over the years, she visited prisoners at Stony Mountain Penitentiary, fed the hungry at the Agape Table on Friday mornings and volunteered at the hospital tending to those in need. A simple first aid course led to a lifelong involvement with St. John's Ambulance Brigade where she served in many capacities including Provincial Superintendent (Nursing) for six years. Jewel was made an Honorary Life Member of the Priory of Canada in recognition of valuable and gratuitous service to the Order. Her association with the Brigade culminated with a promotion to Dame of Grace of the Order in 2001, a distinction reserved for very few. Jewel's charitable works are far too many to mention and we probably don't even know how far reaching they were but suffice it to say her kindness and incredible generosity knew no bounds. Her life in the Catholic Church was of utmost importance to her. She belonged to the Secular Franciscans, St. Anthony's Fraternity and the St. Madeleine Sophie Guild. For many years, she taught Sunday School at St. Mary's School. Some of the students lived a distance away but that didn't matter because some of her family owned cars and were conscripted to pick up students for school. It paid off, at least one of her students became a priest! Jewel is survived by her brother James O'Sullivan (Margaret), her sister Mary Herriot. Didi will be greatly missed by nieces, Patricia Johnston, Barbara Herriot-Miller (Ted), Nancy Militano (Carmine), Mary Elizabeth Deane (Brian); nephews, Paul Newsome, Eugene O'Sullivan and Rob Herriot; great-nieces, great-nephews and one generation beyond that will miss her very much. She was always an active part of our lives, her love and generosity unmatched, we were very lucky to have an aunt like her. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Nellie O'Sullivan; brother John O'Sullivan; sister Helen Johnston; sister Patricia O'Sullivan; niece, Cathy Newsome; brother-in-law Cyril Johnston; and brother-in-law Bob Herriot. Prayers will be held on Tuesday, September 6 at 8:00 p.m. in the Roman Catholic Parish of St. Ignatius of Loyola, 255 Stafford St. at Corydon Avenue. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 7 at 11:00 a.m., also in the church with Rev. Fr. Brian Massie, S. J., presiding. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, 520 Osborne St. Flowers are gratefully declined but if you wish to remember Jewel in a special way, visit someone in need or say the rosary one night or call a shut-in to brighten their day, she did all those things and more.
