HEIDA NANCY SHEWAGA (nee HOLM) November 7,1940 - September 4, 2005 With deep sorrow we announce the passing of Heida after a courageous battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her husband and best friend Peter, father Solvin, mother Bogga and sister Joan. Heida is survived by children, Debbie (Harvey) and Jeff (Jane); grandchildren, Jaclyn, Kevin, Jacob and Isaac; brothers, Donald, Hugh (Jane) and Lester (Rosemary); and sister Lynne (Wendell); and many nieces and nephews. She was born in Gimli, MB where she met her soul mate Peter. Later they moved to Winnipeg where they raised their family in a loving environment. After moving to Fort Garry, Heida became a valued employee of the Cottage Bakery where for many years she was a loved and respected employee. Her warm and good-natured personality endeared her to coworkers and customers alike. Such was the case with anyone she came in contact with, her gentle way bringing anybody in her company a feeling of comfort. Along with Peter, Heida taught her children the values of kindness, compassion, generosity and inner-strength, but in an unobtrusive fashion, simply leading by her own shining example. An amazing cook and a terrific host, Heida loved making her home a welcome place for cherished gatherings of family and friends, she enjoyed numerous family vacations and in more recent years her and Pete shared each other's loving company on various road trips with the adventurous zeal of a couple of kids. Even while confronted by the challenge of the loss of loved ones and her illness, Heida never complained, exhibiting grace, determination, poise and a sense of humour that was an inspiration to us all. She will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her. Our heartfelt thanks to the family and friends who took time to give us their support and comfort, as well as visit with Mom and share their company. Thanks to the heroic efforts of the many caregivers, home care workers, the staff of the Health Sciences Centre, those in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Boniface Hospital, as well as Dr. Brandis and the staff of CancerCare Manitoba. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 9 at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba, the Winnipeg Humane Society, or the charity of your choice.
