MARCIEN (MARS) LEMAY With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Marcien (Mars) Lemay on September 7, 2005, at St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 78 years. Mars was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Blanche Lemay; as well as his brothers, Maurice, Marcel, Jules, Lucien; and his sister Therese. He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 55 years Helene (nee LeNabat); daughter Gisele (Terry) Hampson; sons, Claude (Rhonda) Lemay and Robert Lemay; grandchildren, Kevin (Stephanie) Hampson, David Hampson, Michele (Bob) Lower, Gabriel Delisle; and great-grandchildren, Shayla and Cole Lower. He is also survived by his sisters, Juliette Huot, Lucille Gauthier (Georges); brothers, Pierre Lemay (France) and Paul Lemay; sister-in-law Simone Lemay; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mars was born on October 8, 1926 in St. Boniface and spent all of his life there. He married Helene in October of 1950, whom he shared the love of family, the arts and the outdoors. They spent many years enjoying time at their cottage with their family and friends. He was a firefighter with the St. Boniface Fire Department. His many accomplishments in life included his Louis Riel Sculpture which stands in front of St. Boniface College and many other works of art including his most recent works using the encaustic (wax) medium. Mars will always be remembered for his love and devotion to his family. He will also be remembered as a quiet, gentle and humble man who was extremely driven in achieving his goals in anything he undertook. The family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors and nurses and staff of St. Boniface Palliative Care Ward as well as the palliative home care nurses. We would also like to thank Fr. Roland Lanoie for his support during Marcien's last weeks. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on September 10 at the St. Boniface Cathedral with Fr. Edouard Bonin presiding. Private interment will take place at St. Boniface Cemetery at a later date. • Dear Claude and Robert and family to Marcien Lemay. I always had such tremendous respect for your Dad and his rendition of Riel which continued to cause such controversy when it was unveiled and for years afterwards. I found the sculpture to be so real and so full of emotion hence all the constant diatribe about its meaning. Your Father always held his head up high. He was a proud man and I always celebrated that about him. I went to school with Claude and was friends with Robert. Today, I found and hung the pencil drawing that Robert gave to me of my Father and Sister, dated 1979. He inscribed this message in the drawing..'For my friends, Irene and David and Ian Morrish.' This piece of Art had travelled with me, back and forth across Canada since it was given to me. I treasure 'The Spirit' that drew the vision of my beloved Dad and sister. Your Dad would have been so proud. I hope that you are well, Robert. xo. Respectfully, Irene Morrish-Simmons. - Posted by: Irene Morrish-Simmons (A friend to his sons Claude and Robert Lemay.) on: Jan 04, 2025
