NORMAN BUBIS It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Norman Bubis, on Sunday, March 15, 2009 at the age of 86 at Grace Hospital. Norman was born and raised in the North End of Winnipeg. He served overseas for five years in the Royal Canadian Armed Forces in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and was decorated for service under fire. With his dear wife Ruth (Mandel), he ran the successful Trent grocery store in East Kildonan. From 1970 he managed the Balmoral Motor Hotel with his father-in-law. Norman was an active Mason and became Grand Master of Mt. Sinai Lodge. He was an avid fisherman and especially looked forward to annual trips to Great Bear Lake. But his biggest joy was visiting with his grandchildren and taking pride in all their accomplishments. Everyone who came with contact with Norman, be it relatives, friends, employees or other contacts, would remark on what a fine and special person he was. He was easygoing and always had a kind word for everyone. He was a person of unlimited generosity towards everyone he met with his time and resources, and never expected anything in return. Norman will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Ruth of 56 years; his son Leon and wife Judy; and by his grandchildren, Nathaniel, Shira, Pesach, Tzippy and Frima; his sister Clarise Chapnick and her husband Al; and his four nephews, Mark and David Schwartz of Toronto, and the Chapnick brothers, Dr. Cary of Gimli and Mark of Montreal. Many more friends and relatives mourn his passing with us. Our deepest appreciation goes out to Perry Rubenfeld, his devoted companion and friend, the people at the Shaftesbury Park Retirement Community, and the exceptionally kind and caring nurses and doctors at the Grace Hospital, as well as Dr. Hussan at the cardiology department at the St. Boniface Hospital. The funeral was held at the Chesed Shel Emes chapel, and he was buried near his parents and brother at the B'nai Abraham Cemetery. The pallbearers were Mark Schwartz, Cary and Mark Chapnick, Nathaniel Bubis, Perry Rubenfeld and Ira Micay. Shiva is being observed at 187 McAdam Ave. until Friday afternoon, March 20, 2009.
