JAMES NOEL WUTTUNEE December 22, 1926 - November 26, 2011 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our devoted father and grandpa. Predeceased by his father and mother, James and Jane Wuttunee, survived by his children Isca, Waben, and Naya, their spouses and their children. Noel was born on Red Pheasant First Nation, was a Second World War Veteran with the 1st Canadian Paratroopers Battalion, and a renowned Plains Cree Artist who fell in love with art at a very early age. He always told stories of his childhood memories being raised on the reserve. His mother was always writing poetry and commenting on how beautiful the sunsets were. His fondest childhood memories were of jigging to his father playing the violin. Noel believed art and life were like a natural impulse: life, the art of living, and communicating to one another, is like a beautiful work of art. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 3 at 2:00 p.m., at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. 586-8044

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Noel was a former student of my godmother Marion Nicoll at SAIT in the 1940's. He became friends with my parents Doug and Hilda Doherty. I remember he was very kind and loved children. I was blessed to reconnect with him in the 1970's. He painted a beautiful portrait of me as a baby circa 1952. My parents were thrilled. He replied "She was a beautiful baby. We had some wonderful times with the children in those days didn't we" Marianne Doherty - Posted by: Marianne Doherty (family friend) on: Jan 22, 2017

  • My mother-in-law has a portrait he did of her when she was a little girl. Unlike so many childen's portraits, this one is honest and honours the actual state of mind of the child. She is shown with an expression of intense concentration, unsmiling, gathering focus. Her sitting with him was brief but she remembers him as being very kind. She felt at ease, she said, but during the sitting was caught up in the hard work of not changing her face. - Posted by: Yonah Lavery-Yisraeli () on: Jul 26, 2015

  • Was like a father to me during my struggles of abuse when I was young. Did many pictures of me and my 8 children, came to watch us dances pow wow at the forks. Told us many stories, took me to my first pow wow 40 years ago. Was privileged to meet his children. Rest in peace my friend till we meet again. - Posted by: Annette Riel ( AKA Kim Houle) (Friend ) on: Feb 18, 2015

  • I have a painting by Noel that I have liked since I was a small child. It was given to my parents as payment for a phone bill in 1956 in Cold Lake Alberta by Noel's niece Elsie Bourgaise. I'm sorry I never knew Noel. His painting of a native girl with an eagle feather in her hair has always captivated me. Joe Hine Fredericton NB - Posted by: Joe Hine (Admirer ) on: Dec 25, 2013

  • Noel had a big heart and was very kind to me. - Posted by: John Fitzpatrick (old friend) on: Mar 30, 2012
