LLOYD MCDOUGALL

LLOYD RAMSAY HAROLD MCDOUGALL It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad/Pa, Lloyd Ramsay Harold McDougall on January 4, 2012. Surrounded by his family, Dad succumbed peacefully to his brief illness at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. Dad leaves many family members to mourn his passing. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Irene and six children: Lionel (Sherry) Bjornson; Diane (Rick) Danielson; Brian (Ellen) McDougall; Marshall (Rosemary) McDougall; Eva (Orval) Schurko and Sandy (Terry) Goodall. He also leaves 10 grandchildren: Kim (Carson); Marty (Nicole); Tammi (Gord); Laurie (Joël); Matthew (Kelly); Alanna; Adam; Travis; Collin and Garrity, and four great-grandchildren: Brenden; Bryanna; Anika and Mats. Dad was predeceased by his parents, Duncan Archibald McDougall and Alice Laura Partner; stepfather Fred Partner; brothers Duncan, Russell and Len, and his grandson Trevor. Dad was born in Winnipeg in 1924. He attended Gladstone Elementary and St. Ignatius Schools and finished his education at St. Mary's Cathedral with honours. In May of 1942, at the age of 17, Dad enlisted with the Winnipeg Light Infantry. After training in Vernon, Nanaimo, Calgary and Debert, he was deployed overseas. After transferring to the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders in England, Dad fought in Germany and Holland. He returned home to his family in 1945 after being severely wounded in battle. Dad began his progressive career with the Canadian National Railway when he was 25. After starting as a fireman shoveling coal, he advanced to brakeman, then baggage master and ended his 35-year CNR career as a hostler. Dad loved spending time with his family, going for long drives, doing crosswords and all genres of music, but he had a particular fondness for classical and fiddle music. Dad was an incredibly intelligent man and truly had a way with words. He will be remembered as a wonderful storyteller. Dad loved to make his family laugh, and we were always a ready and willing audience. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Grace Hospital for their compassionate care and thoughtful attention that they gave to Dad in his final days. We would also like to thank those individuals who took care of Dad while he lived at Deer Lodge Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army would be appreciated. A celebration of Dad's life will be held on January 9 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue with interment following the service.   • I miss Lloyd's sense of humour the most. The way he joked with myself and all of the staff, the way he had nicknames for all of us. He was a hard ass, but we all loved him dearly. Not a shift goes by that I don't think about the stories he's shared with me. He loved his family and often spoke of them, even bragged a little. He was always good for a smile and made it clear that he wanted to take care of us- often offering his famous aloe vera for any new tattoo I may have gotten....rest easy Lloyd. Tower 5 misses u so much!

  • Lloyd taught me a lot over the past 12 years since I met him. His spirit and energy will be fondly remembered and his wisdom, experience, and stories will be carried along with me. :)

  • I'm sure going to miss going by Deer Lodge to visit with you Lloyd. Marshall and all of your family: I'm terribly sorry that I can't make it to the funeral either - it's too busy at work and I can't get the time off. RIP my old pal.

  • Lloyd was a source of wisdom, humour and inspiration to all of us at Deer Lodge for many, many years. We will miss him dearly. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family in this very sad time.
