TOMOMI TOM OYE It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our father and grandfather, Tom Oye, in his beloved home on January 25, 2012. We take great comfort knowing that Dad is now with our Mom, Sue Oye, who predeceased him just six months ago. Tom leaves behind four children and special children-in-law: Theresa Oye, Linda Koskie (Bruce), May Oye-Shipp (David) and David Oye (Susan). Mourning for their Grandpa are Lauren and Brian Shipp, and Adam and Jennifer Oye. He is survived by brothers, Will Oye (Fudge) and Moe Oye (Mildred), sisters-in-law, Mabel, Ruby and Marilyn, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, sister, Chiyoko Sakai, and brothers, George, Richard, and Joe. Dad was born in Steveston, BC on February 9, 1925. He and his family were removed from British Columbia during the Second World War, and he was relocated to Whitemouth, MB with Chiyoko and her husband, Kiyoshi. After the war, he moved to Winnipeg where he met our mother and they were married in 1951, the first couple to be married in the newly established Manitoba Buddhist Church. After working as a fisherman and lumberjack, our Dad became a master carpenter, whose work ethic and detail to craftsmanship won him many admirers (and many phone calls from his kids for his help!). Examples of his expertise can be found all over his house and many other homes in Winnipeg. Providing for his family was always his goal in life, one which he readily accomplished. Education for his children was of prime importance for him and our Mom, and he was a proud and patient banker when all his children proceeded on to post secondary education. He loved having lots of family around him, holding babies, patting the hair of toddlers, teasing the older children and teens, and meeting his friends for coffee at McDonalds. All of us have our memory of him sitting in his lazy boy chair, remote control in hand, in the corner of the living room. A memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, on Saturday, February 4 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of koden and flowers, please consider a donation to the Manitoba Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, 180 McPhillips St., Winnipeg, MB R3E 2J9 or the Manitoba Buddhist Temple, 39 Tecumseh St., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0J8.
