SHIRLEY SHAPIRO (nee VINKSY) With great sadness we announce the passing of Shirley Shapiro on February 28, 2012 at the age of 79. She is survived by her children Paul (Jessica), Charlene (Harry), and Michelle (Michael); sister Esther Gardner, brother Dr. Irv Vinsky (Toby), and sister Bernice Druzin (Jack); grandchildren Erin, Ari, Justin, Brendan, and Shayna. She also leaves to mourn brother and sister-in-law Harry and Ros Shapiro, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years Israel Izzy, parents Paul and Molly Vinsky, mother and father-in-law Esther and Benjamin Shapiro, brother-in-law Jack Gardner, and brother and sister-in-law Jack and Sheila Shapiro. Shirley was born on September 25, 1932 and grew up in Winnipeg's North End. She had a very close relationship with her family which continued throughout her life. This strong family bond helped shaped Mom into the loyal and devoted person that we all knew. Shirley and Izzy were married in 1958 and soon had their own family. Shirley was a dedicated mother and wife who together with Izzy, instilled strong family values to their children which in turn, have been passed on to their grandchildren. She took great interest in her children and their families' daily lives, and was incredibly proud of all their achievements. Shirley was exceptionally organized and thorough. She was valued for her work at the Children's Hospital and the State of Israel Bonds office. At home she organized and ran the household. She was a superb cook who prepared many holiday dinners and planned family trips. Shirley loved crossword puzzles, music, going for drives, barbeques, looking at flowers, and a good rainstorm. She looked forward to family get-togethers, camping, travelling, going to the theatre, and out for dinners. Shirley cherished her many friends and her time spent with them. She was a long time member of Na'amat Canada, and a regular in her Mahjong group. Shirley will always be remembered as a strong and proud woman who was dedicated to her family and cared deeply for others. She will be forever loved and missed. Funeral services were held on March 2, 2012 at Etz Chayim Synagogue. Pallbearers were Harry Schwartz, Michael Tessler, Cory Shapiro, David Shapiro, Howie Gilmore, and Alan Daien. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Druzin, Paul Druzin, and Harry Shapiro. The family would like to thank their relatives and friends for all their support. Also thanks to Dr. H. Taylor, and Dr. T. Fatoye and the medical team at the Seven Oaks Hospital. Donations in Shirley's memory can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
