THADDEUS EDWARD WITOSKI It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Thaddeus Edward Witoski on Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at the age of 82 years, at the St. Boniface Hospital with his family by his side. Ted, as he was known to his family and friends, was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and dear friend to many. Ted will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Joan Witoski; four children, Terry (Jani) Witoski, Laurie (David) Kaminski, Kathie (Gerard) Grocholski, and Chris (Val) Witoski; grandchildren Richard, Michael (Lesley) and Christina (Darren), Bryan and Allie (Ryan), Alexis and Jocelyne, Nicholas and Megan; six great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Staska; sisters-in-law, Pat Dawson, Carol Witoski, and Violet Dunn; as well as by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Katherine; sister Bernice Komadowski; brothers Stanley Witoski and Joseph Dawson; and his brothers-in-law Milton Dunn, Frank Staska, and John Komadowski. On July 21, 1932, Ted was born in Tyndall, Manitoba on the family farm. He attended Normal School in Winnipeg where he aspired to become a teacher. It is there that Ted met Joan Dunn. In 1953, they were married and together they raised four children in Winnipeg. Life was never dull or boring. In his early years of teaching, he attended evening classes and summer school to complete his education degree. At the same time, Ted played baseball with the St. James Teachers team, scoring many a home run. He also curled in many bonspiels with the St. James Teachers league. Teaching provided him the opportunity to travel with his family many summers exploring Canada and the United States. Ted was a successful educator and principal for 35 years with the St. James Assiniboia School Division in such schools as Hedges, Ness, Sansome, and John Taylor. He was proud that he was able to influence and shape the lives of so many young people, Ted retired in 1987. The last several years saw Ted completing a family history of both his father's and his mother's families. The research into his father's history led Ted to discover numerous relatives located throughout Europe. He was able to travel to Europe in 2002 to meet and reminisce with these new found relations and he has continued to maintain a close relationship with his cousin, Renate, in Germany. Ted's greatest passion was fishing, spending many happy hours on the lake fishing with his Nutimik Fishing team always on the alert for where the best pickerel fishing spots were in any given season. Oh, how we all enjoyed the pickerel! • Mr. Witoski was my Gr8 French teacher at Deer Lodge. My marks were in the late 90's because of him. He was a wonderful teacher. When I meet with school friends we always speak of him fondly. - Posted by: Penny Cook (Student) on: Nov 28, 2014

  • I Remember Mr. Witoski as a kind man I'm sorry he passed away - Posted by: Joyce Lancaster (student at Hedges) on: Sep 22, 2014

  • Was a great leader, after my vice principal told me I was suspended three days before school ended and was not to receive my report card meaning I couldn't pass grade 8 he nixed Betty ray's decision and passed me. A saint of a man. rip my mentor. - Posted by: Bill Parasidis (My all time favorite principal) on: Sep 18, 2014

  • I had Ted as my home room teacher in 1964-1965( Deer Lodge Jr. High Room 9-21 ). My memories of Ted are exactly as Leslie has posted elsewhere. In fact, on the school ground, we kids would call him "Terrible" Teddy Witoski. He instilled the fear of God in all of us even before we got him as our home room teacher. We were in awe. But once I got to experience his teaching in Grade 9, he was second to none. And of course, his stern approach was always accompanied by a twinkle in his eye. As I was about to turn 60 years old in 2010, I started to think about all the people who had influenced me the most in my life. When it came to teachers, Ted was right on the top of the list. I felt compelled to seek him out, and after 45 years, we corresponded for several months. I am so very thankful that I was able to tell him how great an influemce he had on my development as a person from just that one year and to thank him for that. When I reminisce with friends today, tales of my experience with Ted are always part of the conversation. He had a unique but effective style of teaching. I and my classmates were a handful at times, but Ted molded us into a high performimg group academically. Grade 9 with Ted was one of the best years of my life. I salute you and thank you, sir. Your memory lives on. May you rest in peace. - Posted by: Gary Frost (Former Student Living In Calgary) on: Sep 13, 2014

  • TED WAS A GOOD FRIEND,COLLEAGUE,AND A FISHING COMPETITOR. IT WAS A PLEASURE HAVING TED AS MY PRINCIPAL.MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH JOAN AND HIS FAMILY. - Posted by: Lawrence Overby (Friend) on: Sep 12, 2014

  • As my teacher in Junior High and educational supervisor later in my teaching career I had many opportunities to experience the "tough" side and especially the compassionate side of Ted. He was an influence on me and choices I made. I am grateful to him and know he is fishing happily! My thoughts are with Joan and his family. • Mr. Witoski was my math teacher from grade 7 - 9 (1959-1961) at Deer Lodge Junior High (Ness) Of all my teachers, I can picture him now very clearly. He had a very short brush cut, broad shoulders, always dressed professionally in a suit, and carried a pointer. The students paid attention in his class, he was there to teach and did a very good job of that. Not many students dared to fool around in his class. He came across as very strict, but I admired him and want his family to know, he was a teacher who 'made a difference' in students' lives. God Bless him and his family. - Posted by: Leslie (Student) on: Sep 12, 2014

  • Thank you, Ted, for your friendship. - Posted by: Ron Littlejohn (friend) on: Sep 11, 2014

  • Ted will be remembered as a remarkable school principal who guided his young teachers to teach and care for the students of St. James-Assiniboia. I will never forget the "twinkle" in his eye as he would admonish a student in the hallways of Ness Junior High for some infraction and then turn and wink to me as I passed him going to my classroom. - Posted by: Rick Strongman (Former colleague and friend.) on: Sep 11, 2014

  • We will remember Ted as a very special guy who, as an educational leader, often portrayed himself as being tough on the outside but was a real softy on the inside. It was more than a pleasure to have worked alongside him. It was also a great learning experience. Ted contributed much to many. We pray for Ted and his family and will be forever thankful to have known him. Gary and Pat Hamilton - Posted by: Gary and Patricia Hamilton (Friends and colleagues) on: Sep 11, 2014
