MALACHY HUGHES It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Malachy Hughes on Thursday, July 14, 2016. Left to mourn Malachy's passing are his loving wife of 47 years of marriage, Louisa (nee Kelly); daughter Kelly Rose (Glen and Hunter); son Aaron; brothers Brendan and his wife Elizabeth (Naoimh), Dermot (Colin and Martin) and his wife Hazel in Northern Ireland, and Michael and his wife Hildi (Mark and Ralph) in Rheine, Germany; as well as his brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews in Ireland. He was predeceased by his parents Cronan and Rose Anne Hughes (Belfast, North Ireland). Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on October 18, 1940, Mal lived and was educated there until he came to Canada in 1963. He spent a number of years working for Canadian Marconi and on the Distant Early Warning System in the Arctic (D.E.W. Line). Mal was an avid reader and researcher and strong advocate for ongoing education and travel. He worked for the Department of National Defense in Shilo, Manitoba and Videon Cable Systems in Winnipeg, Manitoba before becoming an instructor in the electronics department at Red River College until he retired in 2006. As a self-taught tradesman, Mal had many great life skills. With the help of his wife and children he built a cozy cottage in Belair, Manitoba. When Mal came to Winnipeg he made many good lifelong friends. They became his Canadian family and are now also left to mourn his passing: The Zimmer Family, The Nagy Family, The Bonnici Family, The Denton Family, and The Neufeld Family. Prayers will be held on Wednesday evening, July 20, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in St. Charles Roman Catholic Church, 320 St. Charles Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. also in the Church with Rev. Fr. Peter Nemcek presiding. A private Family Interment will be held in St. Charles Roman Catholic Parish Cemetery. Sincere thanks to the Fire / Paramedic Responders, Dr. Spence and the staff of Selkirk Hospital Emergency Department for their excellent care and support. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that one make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 - 200 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3L 0K6. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • That we are sorry for you loss seems an adequate sentiment to express how sad we were to hear of Malachy's sudden passing. A husband, father, brother, uncle, friend leaves such a huge space when they leave. Kelly you always spoke so fondly of your dad... my heart is with you and I hope all of you are able to fill that space with warm and wonderful memories. I hope to give you a hug in the near future. XO - Posted by: Patricia Yuzik & Kevin Carswell (Friend) on: Jul 20, 2016
