Betty Joan Stevens

(Nee THORNTON)

September 9, 1934 -

September 12, 2025

Peacefully, we share the passing of our beloved Mom, Amma and Lang Amma on September 12, 2025 at Gimli Betel. She will be lovingly remembered for her kind spirit and gentle heart.

Betty was born on September 9, 1934 to Ragnheidur (Bjarnason) Thornton and Allan Thornton in Camp Morton. Following Betty's birth, Ragnheidur passed away, so Betty was raised by her Aunt Stefania Bjarnason whom she knew as "Mom", and her Uncles Tod and Bjarni Bjarnason at Skidastadir, one mile north of Camp Morton. Betty had an idyllic childhood; she was well loved and well cared for.

In 1954, Betty married Walter Stevens and they had two daughters, Lori and Joan. Mom and Dad were married for 67 years. They spent a lot of time at the farm, gardening, planting trees, hosting family barbecues and making memories.

Betty's first job was at Tergesen's, and later she worked part-time at the Gimli Post Office. She enjoyed curling, reading, puzzles and knitting. She was a long time member of the INL.

Betty was predeceased by her husband Walter, her sister Alice, her son-in-law Frenchie, and most recently, her granddaughter Chelsea.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Lori and Joan (Morris); grandchildren Nicole, Harley (Jaye), Rylee (Myranda), Jesse (Jessica) and Tyson (Samantha). Betty will also be missed by her dear great-grandchildren Shawn, Pearl, Luci, Freya, Tryggve, Jaylee, Kaleb and Kieran.

Betty's family is extremely grateful to the dedicated care givers at Gimli Betel, and the special home care workers who provided assistance to her previously.

Cremation has taken place, and a private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
