PHILIP MUKAI
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Phil Mukai on Friday, August 15, 2025.
Phil was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Lillian, infant sister Roberta and infant brother Michael. He leaves to mourn his wife Sandra Mukai (nee Honer), daughter Meghan McOmber (Chris), son Michael Mukai and grandson, Gavin. He is also survived by many family members.
Phil was born in Winnipeg, MB and grew up in the East Kildonan area. Much of his youth was spent playing sports, with hockey being his true passion. He spent countless hours at Melrose Community Club and also played for the River East Marauders. Beyond the rink, Phil cherished time with his family, especially the many treasured memories during camping trips to the Whiteshell.
Following graduation from River East Collegiate, Phil attended the University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba. After studying social work, Phil joined the Winnipeg Police Service on September 11, 1989. In Phil’s 28-year career, he worked in many units, including General Patrol, Community Policing, Uniform Bicycle Unit, Child Abuse Unit and the Crowd Management Unit. In 2006, he was promoted to Patrol Sergeant and worked in General Patrol and Commercial Crime. He retired in January 2017 and started work as a Special Investigator with the Special Investigations Unit, Manitoba Finance, Taxation.
He volunteered many hours of his time at the Manitoba Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre and Folklorama. He loved to ride his bike taking bike trips out to Lockport on the weekends and would commute to work. His time spent on the Bicycle Unit in policing was his most valued time. His love of hockey continued throughout his adult years until his hospitalization. Phil was able to fulfil his dream of travelling to Japan in 2019.
We wish to thank all of the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital cardiac ICU who supported Phil around the clock for four and a half months. We are grateful for the exceptional care, compassion and support you provided to Phil and our family.
Cremation has already taken place. A celebration of his life will be held at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue on Tuesday, October 7 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba, Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation and Manitoba Possible.
