Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMES (JIM) ROBERT SPEIRS
On the evening of September 11, 2025, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, James (Jim) Speirs, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, after a long illness. He was a kind, generous, and devoted man whose warmth and wit touched everyone he met.
Jim will be greatly missed by his loving partner Kathy, his daughter Sarah (Bill), and Kathy’s son Stephen (Mary Ann). He was a proud and doting grandfather to Gillian (Eduard), and Holly (Jitesh), who brought endless joy and a bit of chaos to his life. He also leaves behind his sister Jane (Doug), his niece and nephews, Patrick, Kate (Mike), and Winston (Nicole); great-niece and nephews, Henry, Nora and Felix, and many cousins, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, Mildred Speirs (nee Jones) and James Gordon Speirs, as well as several beloved uncles and other family members and friends who welcomed him with open arms.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Jim loved his sports! He attended St. Paul’s High School and later graduated from Ridley College. While attending Ridley he excelled on the rowing team. In his younger days, he was an excellent hockey player and would share photos of his time on the Kenora Thistle Hockey Team with his grandkids. Yes, he was quite the athlete!
One of Jim’s greatest joys was spending time at the family cottage. It was here that his lifelong passion for boating began. He loved being out on the water, surrounded by friends and family both at the lake and at Redboine Boating Club. Over the years, Jim and Kathy embraced a shared love of travel, especially winter getaways to Florida and later, cruises with family and friends across Europe, Hawaii, and the Caribbean.
An avid car enthusiast, Jim was well-known in the local car community with his fully restored 1963 split-back Corvette. Sunday car shows and leisurely drives through town were among his favourite ways to relax and connect with others who shared his passion. Jim also loved his Lionel trains, once amassing a huge collection of rare and unique pieces.
Above all, Jim will be remembered for his devotion to his family - especially his granddaughters, whom he adored. Whether sneaking them treats, hosting sleepovers (with or without Nana’s permission!), or being on call for a ride at any hour, he was always there with a smile, a quip, and always with open arms.
We want to thank all the heath care ladies who provided love and care over the past three years, especially those who stayed overnight so Kathy could sleep. You know who you are!
Jim’s kindness, humour, and deep love for his family will be profoundly missed.
As per Jim’s wishes, cremation has taken place, with no formal funeral planned. Burial at sea will be at a later date, when Kathy is reunited with Jim and joins him on his cloud.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made at an organization of your choice.
