Predeceased by parents, Anna and Henry Smith, sister June Barber (nee Smith), brother Dwain Smith. Survived by beloved husband Wayne R. Bell, and son Cameron Bell.
Margaret grew up in St. James and attended Brittania, Linwood, Deer Lodge Junior, and St. James Collegiate Schools. Margaret loved to play catch and bat with her dad when he came home from working at TCA/Air Canada. Being the youngest of three, Margaret's parents swooned over her and was given everything she asked for. When Disneyland opened in 1955, Margaret's parents took her on a road trip shortly thereafter. She also went on a trip to Bermuda and later Europe with her mother. Margaret also studied piano through the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto and achieved a grade 9 piano certificate. As she got older, she travelled to Australia and spent over a year there before returning home. She then became a nurse practitioner. Margaret was also a member of the Winnipeg Ski Club, and on January 9, 1970, at a social at the club, met her future husband, Wayne. They had their first date skating on the Duck Pond at Assiniboine Park.
In 1976 their son Cameron was born, and as he got older, he joined them for skating on the Duck Pond. The family always enjoyed birthdays and anniversaries, and one was never missed. Margaret will be dearly missed by Wayne, her husband of 54 years who loved and cared for her over the years, even when health issues arose. He would not have had it any other way. She will also be missed by her only son Cameron who admired his mother's sense of spontaneity and adventurous streak.
After celebrating a glorious birthday on August 15 at Assiniboine Park, followed by a birthday dinner, Margaret suffered a stroke on Sunday, August 17, and passed away on August 20, with her family at her side. Even though she could not speak, her husband and son sensed she could feel their presence, knowing that she was loved. It will be hard to carry on without her, but we move forward with grace and fortitude. She will never be forgotten.
A private service will be held at Chapel Lawn Cemetery.
