It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather, who left us unexpectedly on September 18, 2025, at the age of 80. His presence in our lives was a gift, and his absence leaves an ache in our hearts. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Born on September 24, 1944, in Thicket Portage, Manitoba, from Cross Lake First Nation. He spent his life travelling to different First Nation communities to work. Joe was a vibrant spirit who brought joy and laughter wherever he went. He loved teasing and joking around and was a very serious driver; he taught almost everyone in the family how to drive. Joe loved playing bingo and enjoyed spending his evenings with the bingo community. Special thank you to all his bingo friends, he loved your company.
He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Baptiste and Maggie Crait, grandparents (maternal), Catherine and Sandy Crait, grandparents (paternal), John and Eva Bailey. Beloved, brothers, Sandy Crait, Michael Crait, and beloved sisters, Evelyn Cook and Gladys Crait. His beloved daughter, Doreen Brass, grandson, Brian Brass, sister-in-law Cecilia Crait, nieces, Michelle Cook, Deanna Crait and great-niece Chelsea Stevens.
Joe is survived by his beloved children, Karen Brightnose and Bruce Brightnose. His siblings, Lorna Crait, Randy Crait, Irene Munroe (Ross), Albert Crait (Paula), Cathy Crait, Margaret Cook (Sam) and Johnny Crait (Alice). He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed his trips up to Cross Lake First Nation and Thompson, MB.
Joe lived a life filled with love, and his soul mate was Sherill Hornbrook (February 21, 1956 - March 21, 2024) for 38 years. They raised Kendra Miles (Bodie), Tatum Berens and Jacob Berens, since they were babies. His stepsons, Alfred Roulette (Anthony, Jenessa, Nova), Leslie Hornbrook (Angel), stepdaughters, Margaret Hornbrook, Isabel Hornbrook and Clemene Hornbrook (Earl Stevenson). Joe leaves behind 31 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Honorary Pallbearers: Randy Crait, Albert Crait, Johnny Crait, Bruce Brightnose, Jacob Berens, Wilson Hornbrook, Daryle Hornbrook, Jason Hornbrook, Mohammad Khan, Dreyden Hornbrook and Ashton Hornbrook.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Glen Eden Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB. Interment & Funeral, Friday, September 26, 2025, 10:00 a.m., Glen Eden Funeral Home and Cemetery. Final Resting Place: Glen Eden Funeral Home and Cemetery with Sherill Lynn Hornbrook.

Joe is going to be greatly missed by all of his many friends at 515 Elgin. He always took a moment to say hi, or give me a wave on his way in or out of the block, and I'm going to miss him very much.
