Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANNETTE IRENE COATES
It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of our beloved Mother and Grandmother, Annette Irene Coates, on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at the age of 101 years.
Annette was predeceased by her husband, Robert Clifford Coates; her parents, Joseph and Therese Marchand; her four brothers and their spouses, Leo (Helen), Arthur (Josee), Alphonse (Lucie), Ernie (Irene); and her three sisters and husbands, Yvonne (Barney), Eva (Amadee), and Florina (Marcel).
Remaining to cherish her memory are her family, Dean and Shareen Coates, Terry and Nancy Coates, children, Benjamin Nadeau (Amber), Joshua Nadeau (Lauren), great-grandson Lincoln, Bentley and Michelle Coates, and her adored grandchild Natasha plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Annette was born in Benson, Saskatchewan on January 21, 1924. With her family, she relocated to Cardinal, Manitoba in 1934. Upon graduation from Notre Dame de Lourdes High School, Annette became a permit teacher in Stephenfield Consolidated School. The following year, she graduated from Winnipeg Normal School where she received her Teacher’s Certificate.
Annette had a 31 year career as a school teacher. She taught at Queen Elizabeth School in Norwood, during the last 22 years of her career. She taught French to Junior High classes.
Annette married Cliff Coates and they made their home in Morris, Manitoba for three years, where their first two sons, Dean and Terry, were born. Annette returned to her job at Queen Elizabeth School. A third son, Bentley, was born to them in 1962. Annette retired from teaching in 1979 and became a florist.
Annette and Cliff worked side by side to build their summer home in Sandy Hook, Manitoba, which they named “The Challenge”. Their boys and wives plus many friends helped enormously, in this huge project.
Annette, a devoted Roman Catholic, belonged to St. Bernadette’s parish in Windsor Park. In the last years when Cliff’s health forced them to leave the Park, Annette became a parishioner in the Cathedral parish in St. Boniface. Her faith guided her life and gave her strength to forge ahead, when Cliff’s health failed.
Mom was a kind, loyal and gentle lady whose priorities were her family and their home. She was never too busy to help family or anyone who needed her.
The family wish to extend very sincere thanks for the great care provided to Mom, by Riverview Health Centre, CD3 unit.
Cremation has taken place and a private family internment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to L’Arche Canada Foundation.

My condolences to Mrs. Coates's family on her passing. I had her for grades 7, 8 and 9 French. I could not roll my R's and she tried to help me but I never could. She was a great teacher. I would like to share a quote with her family. Annette has not died, but gone away to a better place free of pain and suffering. We will see her again some day. Rest in Peace Annette. - Posted by: Patricia Homenick (Student at Queen Elizabeth Junior High) on: Nov 08, 2025

Mrs. Coates was my teacher at Queen Elizabeth. I have fond memories of her smile. All her students loved her. My sincere condolences to her family. - Posted by: Christine (Hallem) Ward (Former student) on: Nov 08, 2025
