EDWARD CARTER
Edward Carter of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital on April 16, 2026.
He is survived by sons Christopher Carter and James Carter; nephews Ross MacDonald and John Carter (Lorraine); nieces Heather Baker (John), Colleen Noyes-Reynolds (Kim), Pamela Carter (Gary) and Carrie Schroeder (Warren); and sister-in-law Lily Stearns.
He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years Jenny; sister Mona Noyes; brother Jack Carter; nephew Guy Noyes; and mother Cora Carter.
Edward was born in Winnipeg and spent his youth in Pikwitonei, Manitoba, where his rugged strength with a touch of rebellious spirit was forged.
Edward and Jenny married in 1956 and settled on Halkirk Bay in East Kildonan. He patiently taught his sons to ride a bicycle, throw a baseball, and box (“left hand up, protect your head”).
He was a plainspoken man with a quiet exterior but a compassionate heart. His teaching was done not by lectures but through subtle acts of kindness and generosity.
He had a long career with Manitoba Hydro. In retirement he and Jenny attended baseball games, watched Blue Bomber football, and enjoyed vacations in Canada, the United States, and Europe. In winter he faithfully put out seed, peanuts and bread for birds and rabbits.
He was proud of his English heritage and had abiding respect for the British royal family.
His stoic exterior broke briefly only twice, in a veterinary exam room in 2008 when saying a last goodbye to his and Jenny’s longtime cat Hobbes, and at home in 2022 when told of Jenny’s passing.
Our father, brother, uncle, and friend Edward lived a good life. He now roams the stars high above East Kildonan’s leafy trees and the Manitoba wilderness of his youth.

Chris and James, I worked with your dad for several years in the 80/90s in Collections at MH. He was a mentor of sorts to me, as much on “life” as work. He was a character, with dry wit and sense of mischievousness. Ed was a few years older than many of us twenty-somethings at that time, and while we could occasionally rope him into joining in our silly workplace shenanigans, we could always count on him to step up and deal with our difficult or hard-luck customers with tact and diplomacy. My uncle was a big part of my life and I have many happy memories over the years with family get togethers with him and my Aunt Jenny. Precious memories now of them with my brother Guy at christmas, and dinners at Maxime's and Halkirk Bay with my mom in later years. In recent times I enjoyed visiting him and sharing donuts, coffee and conversation. He will be missed.
