MUSA SHAFIK KHALIDI From God we come and to Him we return. It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Musa Shafik Khalidi on September 26, 2002. He passed away peacefully at his home in Winnipeg. He is survived by his faithful wife, Jihad, of 40 years, and his sons, Nadim, Nader, and Hani, as well as his brothers, sister, nephews and nieces, and other family in Jordan, Jerusalem, Canada and the United States. Musa was born on April 9th, 1925 in Gaza, Palestine. He worked from 1948 to 1952 in Food Distribution for Palestinian Refugees in the Gaza Strip, first as a volunteer with the Quakers Team (Friends), and later in medical administration for UNWRA. He had long years and recognition working in Jordan in the service of community development and co-operatives including the study of the role of co-operatives in community development in Scandinavia, and India. In 1966, Musa earned his B.A. (Distinction) in Sociology at The American University of Beirut and went on to complete his Ph.D. at the University of Alberta, and became a Canadian Citizen in 1973. He spent 20 years teaching Sociology at The University of Manitoba. In 1989 he retired as an Associate Professor and became a Senior Scholar. Dr. Khalidi was the first recipient, in 1985, of The Fr. Cecil Ryan Rectors Award at St. Pauls College for his outstanding contribution to the life of the College. In 1966 he was awarded the Jordanian Medal of Independence, Third Order, bestowed upon him by the late H.M. King Hussein. In the same year he received the Jordanian Co-Operative Institute medal for his distinguished service in the field of education for adults in co-operative organizations. Funeral prayers and service will be conducted on Friday September 27, at 2:30 p.m.. at the Manitoba Islamic Centre, 247 Hazelwood, St. Vital.
